Dr. Sanchez-Roige will study impulsivity, a maladaptive trait associated with addiction and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and other disorders. Genome-wide association studies have identified robust associations between the gene CADM2, which encodes a mediator of synaptic signaling, and various measures of risky and impulsive behavior. Using mice in which the gene is knocked out, she seeks to discover the gene’s role in modulating impulsive behavior and synapse morphology, hoping to apply this knowledge in the context of psychiatric conditions associated with high levels of impulsivity.
